 Overview

Pro Rural Organisation, with support from DonateKart and voluntary support from the Assam Baptist Convention successfully conducted a hygiene kit distribution programme for flood-affected families in Sivasagar, Assam. The intervention was undertaken to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to families who had been severely affected by prolonged waterlogging, restricted movement, and disruption of access to basic necessities.

The distribution reached 500 beneficiaries across five blocks, covering families from different religious and backgrounds. The initiative focused on restoring access to essential hygiene materials while providing families with a sense of dignity, care, and reassurance during a difficult period.

 Situation and Rationale

The distribution was undertaken against the backdrop of challenging conditions faced by flood-affected communities in Sivasagar. Prolonged waterlogging disrupted normal life and restricted the movement of families in several affected areas. Many households remained confined within their homes for three to four consecutive days, with limited access to markets, essential commodities, sanitation facilities, and other basic services.

For families already dealing with the loss and disruption caused by the floods, maintaining basic hygiene became an additional challenge. Access to essential personal hygiene materials was particularly difficult when roads and surrounding areas remained waterlogged and movement was restricted.

In such circumstances, the hygiene kits served as an important immediate-response intervention. While the kits addressed practical hygiene needs, the assistance also carried a deeper message: that affected families were not alone and that support was reaching them when they needed it most.

 Distribution and Community Coverage

A total of 500 hygiene kits were distributed across five wards, ensuring that assistance reached families from different communities and religious backgrounds. The inclusive nature of the distribution reflected the humanitarian principle of providing assistance based on need rather than identity, religion, or social background.

The distribution was coordinated at the community level to facilitate an orderly process and ensure that identified beneficiaries could receive the assistance. The engagement with community members also provided an opportunity for the team to better understand the immediate difficulties faced by households following the flooding.

The response was particularly meaningful for families who had spent several days confined to their homes. For many, receiving a hygiene kit was not simply about receiving a package of essential items; it represented a timely intervention at a point when their normal routines and access to basic necessities had been severely disrupted.

Humanitarian Significance of the Hygiene Kits

The hygiene kits played an important role in helping affected families meet their immediate personal hygiene needs during the recovery period. Following flooding, maintaining cleanliness and personal hygiene can become considerably more difficult due to restricted access to clean surroundings, disrupted water and sanitation facilities, and the general deterioration of living conditions.

The assistance therefore contributed towards:

  • Supporting basic personal hygiene among affected families.
  • Reducing the immediate burden of purchasing essential hygiene items after the flood.
  • Helping families maintain dignity and cleanliness despite difficult living conditions.
  • Providing practical support during the early recovery period.
  • Reassuring vulnerable households that their needs and well-being were being recognised.

Most importantly, the intervention provided a sense of hope and solidarity. After days of uncertainty and isolation, the arrival of relief assistance helped communicate to families that their situation mattered and that people and organisations were willing to stand with them during their difficult time.

The Role of DonateKart and Pro Rural Organisation

The successful response was made possible through the partnership between DonateKart and Pro Rural Organisation. DonateKart’s support enabled essential relief materials to reach affected communities, while Pro Rural’s local presence and field-level coordination helped facilitate the distribution directly among the identified beneficiaries.

This collaboration demonstrated the importance of combining timely resources with local knowledge and community-level implementation. While the provision of relief materials is critical, ensuring that those materials reach the right people at the right time is equally important in an emergency response.

Pro Rural’s involvement also enabled the team to engage directly with affected families, observe the conditions on the ground, and understand some of the immediate challenges that communities were continuing to face.

 Community Experience and Observations

The distribution provided an opportunity for the team to interact directly with families and witness the impact of the flooding beyond the immediate physical damage. Many households had experienced several days of restricted movement and uncertainty, with limited ability to access essential supplies.

The presence of beneficiaries from different religious communities was particularly significant. Despite differences in faith and background, the experience of the disaster was shared, and the need for assistance was common. The distribution therefore became more than a relief activity it became an expression of community solidarity and shared humanity.

The response reinforced an important lesson from humanitarian work: during a crisis, even a modest intervention can have a meaningful emotional impact when it reaches people at the right moment.

 Key Outcomes

The hygiene kit distribution resulted in the following key outcomes:

  1. 500 flood-affected families received immediate hygiene assistance.
  2. Assistance was extended across five wards, ensuring wider community coverage.
  3. Families from different religious and social backgrounds were included in the response.
  4. The intervention helped address immediate personal hygiene needs following prolonged flooding and waterlogging.
  5. The assistance reduced some of the immediate pressure on families who were already coping with the effects of the disaster.
  6. The distribution contributed to restoring a sense of dignity, care, and reassurance among affected families.
  7. The partnership between DonateKart and Pro Rural demonstrated an effective model of timely donor support combined with local-level humanitarian action.

 Overall Impact

The Sivasagar hygiene kit distribution was a timely and meaningful humanitarian intervention for families affected by the floods. With 500 families reached across five wards, the response provided practical assistance while also offering emotional reassurance during a period of uncertainty.

For families who had remained indoors for three to four days, surrounded by floodwater and unable to move freely or access basic supplies, the arrival of relief assistance represented a visible sign of support. It reminded them that their difficulties had been heard and that they were not facing the aftermath of the disaster alone.

The initiative also highlighted the value of community-centred humanitarian response. The participation of families from diverse religious backgrounds demonstrated that disasters affect communities without distinction, and relief efforts are most meaningful when they are inclusive and driven by need.

Through the combined efforts of DonateKart and Pro Rural Organisation, 500 families were reached with essential hygiene support. Beyond the material value of the kits, the intervention helped restore a small measure of hope, dignity, and confidence among families working to recover and rebuild their lives.

 Conclusion

The successful completion of the Sivasagar hygiene kit distribution reflects the importance of timely and compassionate humanitarian assistance following a disaster. The intervention addressed an immediate need while strengthening the sense of solidarity between affected communities, civil society, and supporting partners.

Pro Rural Organisation remains grateful to DonateKart for stepping forward to support the affected families. The partnership demonstrates how coordinated action can transform essential relief materials into meaningful support for communities during times of crisis.

The distribution was not only about providing hygiene kits, it was about reaching people when they were most vulnerable, restoring dignity when normal life had been disrupted, and reminding affected families that they were not alone.
