Overview
On 26th September, Pro Rural in partnership with the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) organised a Community Awareness Programme under the theme, “Swachhotsav” which means focusing on the importance of clean and green festivities and zero waste community celebrations. Similarly, the central idea of the program was to sensitize the community, especially the micro-business enterprises and the general public on sustainable waste management and civic responsibilities. A total of 100 participants and 6 staff members attended the program.
Introduction to the Session
Mr. Rukkimong from Skills to Succeed (S2S) department invoked God’s blessing over the smooth functioning of the program. After which, the programme began with welcome addresses by Ward No. 2 councillor Neingutoulie Kenguruse and Pro Rural Director Paul Lokho, who both encouraged the importance of collective action between civic bodies and citizens in building a cleaner and greener Dimapur.
Knowledge-sharing Session
Delivering the keynote address, DMC CEO Thungchanbemo Tungoe outlined activities planned under the Swachhotsav campaign, inclusive of sanitation medical camps, advocacy drives and clean and green festivities culminating on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. Another keynote address was delivered by Councillor Mahesh Agarwal, speaking on the campaign’s objectives, warned against illegal dumping and said heavy fines would be imposed on violators.
Mr. Boka Rochill, climate champion (NYCC) stated that, “A clean Dimapur is not only about safe living spaces for our children but also about building civic pride and responsibility.” He further emphasised that this campaign reflects Dimapur’s collective aspiration for change.
Thematic Session
Ms. Tolivi N Sumi, Project Coordinator (EWM) delivered a thematic session titled, “Mind Unlock.” She presented a data showing Dimapur generates 74.6 metric tons of waste daily from 6,135 households, with nearly 60% being biodegradable. She stressed the need for household-level segregation and recommended composting, plastic re-use and responsible e-waste disposal. Likewise, she stressed the importance of community participation and adoption of simple practices such as segregation wet and dry waste, and composting kitchen scraps into garden manure.

The spokespersons applauded the Pro Rural organisation for their collaborative actions and technical expertise to address environmental challenges and waste management.
The program concluded successfully, followed with a pledge ceremony where participants reaffirmed their commitment to cleanliness, segregation and sustainable living under the Swachhotsav initiative.
